Slice Drawing Tips

Have you tried the Drawing Tips that are available for the Slice? Transform your Slice from a cutting machine into a colorful drawing machine! There are four color collections – all black; basics (black, grey, brown, and red); primary (green, yellow, red, blue); and brights (pink, purple, orange, turquoise).

Here’s a card I made using the primary collection of drawing tips.

First I laid my white textured card on my Slice mat, and used the green drawing tip in my Slice with the Baby design card to draw a 3” shadow of the baby building blocks.

I put the large butterfly in the approximate position where I wanted it to be, then used the yellow drawing tip with the Basics 2 design card to draw my two 1” butterflies. I love how I can use my Slice at an angle like this, putting it exactly where I need it on my design!

I wanted a softer look than the colors the drawing tips gave, so I cut the same butterflies at 1” using the shadow feature. I fixed the vellum butterflies (let’s call them the wings!) with Making Memories colored staples.

For the baby building blocks, I also cut a 3” shadow from vellum, then a regular 3” cut of the same shape from Making Memories Dilly Dally paper. I layered the vellum so only part of it was over the green of the drawing tips so some parts looked lighter than others.

The beautiful printed acetate butterfly, plus the sparkly flower and butterfly brads, are all from the Making Memories Dilly Dally Collection.

Dilly Dally Slice Design Card

I decided to have a bit of fun with this project, and take it off the page to make some flowers, bugs and a mini banner in time for Easter! This bunny was given to me a long time ago with real flowers in the pot. In recent years the pot has been repurposed for these mini Easter eggs which I fill with chocolates and other goodies. I decided I could make some flowers which wouldn’t wilt or need watering! J


All the designs for this project were cut using the Dilly Dally Slice design card, and the papers are all from the Making Memories Dilly Dally collection.

The Dilly Dally design card was absolutely perfect for this project. It has all sorts of fun and whimsical shapes and designs that fit really well with any Spring-themed project. What’s more, the Dilly Dally card has the layering feature which means your designs can really pop, especially if you use dimensional glue dots like I did on several of the elements here. This is a great way to make your own layered embellishments, fit to just the size you need them for your project!

For the banner, I used my Slice to cut out the pennants and letters from the Dilly Dally design card. I wanted this to be a mini banner so the letters are cut at 1" and the pennants at 2". The glittery green scalloped edge paper for the banner is cut from one of the large specialty glitter-edged sheets. I laid out all the pieces before sticking anything together, to make sure everything would fit properly.

I cut the flowers and bugs at 3”. In a couple of cases I cut more than one of a particular shape or layer, so I could mix and match the papers some more. I love how some of the Dilly Dally papers have glitter and others have foil; it adds some more textures and catches the light in different ways. I used pop dots to add dimension for some of the layers. Then I used green pipe cleaners for the flower stems which I cut a bit shorter, then yellow and pink pipe cleaners for the critters to make it seem more like they were flying around above the flowers.

I think I’m going to be using the Dilly Dally design card for so many more projects! I’m excited to share another layout where I’ve been able to use the Slice Ballpoint Pen Tips. Make sure you leave a comment on this post to be entered to win a set of these tips!

The pen tips fit in your Slice the same way as the blades – just use your wrench tool to take out the blade and put in the pen tip, then make sure you set the cutting mode to embossing / drawing.

This time I used the pen tips to embellish a strip of paper to fit with the overall layout of the page. This is a great way to make your own patterned paper with exactly the shapes you want. A friend snapped this picture of me with my nose in a guidebook as I stood next to one of the Great Pyramids in Egypt. I wanted to make it look like I was lost, so I used the pen tips to create the repeating arrows theme on my paper.

I drew all the shapes at 1” in size which made it easier to line them up when moving the Slice from one to the next. The guide marks on the Slice itself and on the cutting board really help with this. All the arrow shapes come from the Remember This and the Animal Crackers design cards. 

I typed the first part of the title on my computer then ran my patterned paper through my printer.

In order to get the alignment right for the title stickers, I find it helpful to line them up on a ruler which I can then move around until the placement looks good.

I also used my Slice to cut the tab to hold the text about Egypt (which I cut from Making Memories Panorama embellishment paper), then affixed it using Making Memories green staples. The tab shape came from the Basic Elements design card.

All the patterned papers and the fabulous dimensional stickers (I love these!) for ‘pyramid’ are from the Making Memories Panorama collection.

Slice Ballpoint Pen Tips

Today I’m going to show you a couple of ways you can use the Slice Ballpoint Pen Tips in your titling and journaling. The pen tips are available in a pack with black and blue, and enable you to draw using your Slice.

There’s a wrench on the end of each container so you can remove the blade and insert one of the pen tips; just turn the wrench until it feels tight. Then make sure you set the cutting mode to embossing / drawing when you put in your design card and you’re ready to draw!

For this tag, I used the Making Memories NEW Dilly Dally collection and design card. First I used the ballpoint black pen tip to draw the tag shape, and then I switched to shadow mode to cut out the tag. Next I layered the flowers and used pop dots to raise them a little. In the opposite corner I used a cute bug brad to look down over the tag. I cut the word ‘spring’ from the Words & Expressions design card. This tag could be used on a scrapbook page, card or any other project you can think of.

For the layout below, I again used the Words & Expressions card to draw the word ‘joy’. Then I cut out the layered shape using the Dilly Dally design card, which I also used to cut out the layered bird. The papers and embellishments are all from the Dilly Dally collection.

From small beginnings

So I finally gave in and started a blog. I think it’s been coming for a while but now seemed like a great time to start! I’ll be blogging about my scrapbooking, card making and any other stops I plan on making along my creative journey… and maybe some unplanned stops too. J
